Andhra Pradesh - Vijayawada ATM, cyber café for city railway station soon

Andhra Bank, SBI move to cash in on the opportunity
VIJAYAWADA: Have you ever felt the need for some extra money while on a long journey? Don't worry. If you are passing through the biggest railway junction - Vijayawada - in South India, you can draw those few bucks from an ATM. Wanna check your e-mail when your train halts here? Check into the cyber café. Take a pause. You need to wait for three more months to use these facilities.
With a view to enhancing passenger amenities, the railway authorities turned their focus to installation of ATMs and setting up of a communication centre.
The Andhra Bank and the State Bank of India (SBI) proposed to knock off this opportunity. ATMs of these banks would function from platform numbers one and six respectively. The railway authorities allotted vantage points to the banks to set up the ATMs.
Customers of the SBI and seven of its associate banks can do their transactions through the SBI ATM free of cost, while VISA International cardholders can use any of these two ATMs. Customers of the HDFC and UTI Banks can avail themselves of the ATM facility to be offered by the Andhra Bank.
SBI upbeat
An ATM is viable to the bankers only when it registers at least 200 transactions a day. Besides installation, the bankers have to bear the expenditure of its maintenance like monthly rent to the site, electricity charges and payment of salaries to security guards.
"We are confident that the venture will be a success. We may not get immediate response, but the customers will begin using the facility slowly," says DGM of the SBI N.V. Suryanarayana Rao.
DGM of the Andhra Bank N. Patel too is not apprehensive about the viability of the project as about 200 trains pass through the station every day and hundreds come to the station to get their tickets reserved. "It is useful to our customers across the country," he says.
Railtel Corporation of India Limited, a subsidiary company of the Ministry of Railways, has decided to set up cyber cafes in 25 railway stations across the country by the end of this financial year and chosen Vijayawada as one of them.
Food plaza
A site has been selected between food plaza and overbridge on platform number one and tenders have been called for by the Railtel for the project.
"The Railtel has reserved the maintenance of the café for ST women earlier. Since there is no response to its notification, it has invited applications from any interested party," says B.S. Christopher, senior divisional commercial manager. "The proposed cyber café will have two entrances - from platform number one and outside the station," he explains.
